Glavil Attacking This example of spiritia powers in combat is based on episode 28 of the Macross 7 TV series ("Insert Name Here"). In this episode the protodeviln Gavil and Glavil have launched an attack on the Macross 7 colony fleet, currently stranded on the planet Lux. Glavil has already dispatched an entire squadron of Northampton-class stealth frigates, and now all that stands between them and the Macross 7 are a few remaining VF-11 fighters, Diamond force, Emerald Force, and Sound Force (minus Basara, who is busy trying to wake Sivil from a coma somewhere inside City 7).

The main players in this combat (and their associated attributes) are as follows:

Name Character Class M.E. Performance Skill Current Spiritia Level
BASARA NEKKI 5th Level Anima Spiritia 18 Singing 75% 95 points
MYLENE JENIUS 4th Level Nonmilitary OCC (Singer) 14 Singing 60% 80 points
LT. RAY LOVELOCK 5th Level Veritech Pilot / 4th Level Nonmilitary OCC (Musician) 15 Play Musical Instrument (Keyboards) 60% 50 points
VEFFIDAS 4th Level Meltraedi Pilot / 4th Level Nonmilitary OCC (Musician) 17 Play Musical Instrument (Drums) 60% 50 points
LT. GAMLIN KIZAKI 5th Level Variable Fighter Pilot 14 No Performance Skills 14 points (max)

Round 1

Mylene in Personal SES Mylene opens the combat by singing Holy Lonely Night and spending 10 spiritia points to activate her personal Sound Energy System, dropping her total spiritia points to 70 but giving her a 10 to 1 ratio on sound energy points generated for spiritia expended. This is her one spiritia action for the round. Both Gavil and Glavil sense Mylene's generated sound energy and are impressed. Glavil responds almost reflexively by powering up an energy blast that he will fire at Mylene next round. Gamlin fires at Glavil with his VF-17 without much effect. However, the GM decides that Mylene's singing has inspired Gamlin, giving him a 3D6 bonus to his spiritia level. Gamlin rolls a 11, so his current spiritia is raised to 25 points.

Round 2

VF-11Kai and VF-17 Fighting Glavil fires at Mylene but fortunately Gamlin pushes her VF-11 out of the way to avoid the beam. Mylene could have also generated a Minor Energy Shield to block the beam by spending 10 spiritia points (100 sound energy points) but that would have negated any other spiritia attacks for the round. Ray decides to try and activate the new Sound Boosters, which would provide Mylene with a 100 to 1 sound energy/spiritia point ratio and the ability to use major spiritia powers. Unfortunately Mylene doesn't have enough spiritia points to activate the sound boosters (she needs 100 but has only 70 available). She doesn't automatically lose the 70 spiritia points she currently has but doesn't get to do a spiritia attack this round. Dr. Chiba contacts Ray and explains to him that Mylene needs more spiritia to activate the sound booster. "You must sing with more feeling!"

Meanwhile...

Back at City 7, Basara has been expending spiritia in an attempt to perform spiritia revival on the comatose Sivil. The GM knows that this is a futile attempt but doesn't tell Basara, who is getting frustrated at the lack of response from Sivil. By this time Basara's spiritia level has dropped to 95 points (normally it is much higher).

Suddenly, Basara notices the combat going on outside of City 7. He reluctantly decides to abandon Sivil and join the fight.

Back at the battle (Round 6)...

Explosion near VF11Kai The battle is going badly for the defenders. Glavil has just let loose another energy beam and downed about a dozen VF-11 Thunderbolts in a single shot. Mylene declares that she will attempt to use her Protodeviln Attack power against Glavil by spending 20 spiritia points (200 sound energy points). Protodeviln Attack takes one round (15 seconds) to use, so Mylene won't actually get to use the power until next round. Unfortunately a damaged VF-11 explodes next to her this round, forcing her to roll under her M.E. on a 20-sided die to maintain concentration. She misses the roll (rolls a 16), loses her concentration as well as the 20 spiritia points she was going to use for the attack (her total is now down to 50). She then rolls a 4 on a 1D6, meaning that it'll be at least round 11 before she can make another spiritia attack.

Round 7

VF17 Defending VF11Kai Gamlin continues to fire his gunpod at Glavil in an attempt to defend Mylene. Mylene attempts to raise her battloid and discovers to her horror that the VF-11 won't move. Her computer informs her that the turbine blades on her engines are damaged and thus her VF isn't getting any power. Still stunned from the explosion in round 6 and without any power, Mylene doesn't get to make ANY attacks (spiritia or physical) this round.

Round 8

Protodeviln Energy Wave Gavil tells Glavil to use his expanding energy wave attack to get rid of the pesky VFs and crush Mylene. The VF-11s closest to Glavil instantly take 1D6x100 M.D. and are destroyed. Gamlin shields Mylene with his VF-17 but starts taking 6D6 M.D. to the main body of his mecha per round. His pinpoint barriers take care of the damage for now, but he won't be able to keep this up for long...

Fortunately a very pissed Basara arrives on the scene in his Fire Valkyrie. He immediately spends 10 spiritia points to activate his personal SES, reducing his spiritia to 85.

Round 9

VF19Kai is Hit Basara prepares to use his Repel Protodeviln power, spending 15 points (150 sound energy points) and dropping his spiritia to 70. Unfortunately he will have to wait until next round to see if he was successful. Glavil fires off a quick energy blast and hits Basara. At the last second Basara shifts his spiritia to Minor Energy Shield to repel the attack. Since the energy shield only costs 100 sound energy points the remaining 50 points (5 spiritia points) are returned to Basara, raising his spiritia to 75. Glavil rolls 500 on 1D6x100, so Basara's shield (500 MDC vs. Protodeviln) just barely absorbs the blast. The impact throws the Fire Valkyrie to the ground.

Round 10

Glavil Preparing To Fire Gamlin covers for Basara by attacking Glavil again. By this time Gavil is getting annoyed by the VF-17's useless attacks and orders Glavil to crush Gamlin. Glavil starts powering up yet another energy beam. Basara is getting REALLY ticked at this point, and the GM decides that he's starting to lose spiritia because he's so angry at a rate of 2D6 per round. The GM rolls a 5 on 2D6, so Basara's spiritia drops to 70. Not too bad, YET. Basara spends another 15 points (total now 55) and attempts to use Repel Protodeviln again.

Round 11

This time Basara wins initiative, and attacks with his Repel Protodeviln attack. Unfortunately both Gavil and Glavil get to roll a saving throw against Basara's attack. Gavil rolls a 17 and Glavil rolls a 12; both make their saving throws!

Glavil advances, moving Gamlin and Mylene into the 2D6x10 MD per round range of the expanding energy wave attack. Gamlin's pinpoint barriers are overloaded and he begins taking serious damage to his VF-17's main body. Some of the damage also gets through to Mylene's VF-11. Both of them need help badly.

Glavil also fires his energy blast at Basara. This time since Basara has already used his one spiritia attack for the round he can't generate an energy shield to deflect the blast. Fortunately the GM only rolls a 2 on 1D6, so Basara only takes 200 MDC of damage. 50 are absorbed by the PPB, so 150 points of damage are deducted from the Fire Valkyrie's main body MDC. Things are looking bad for the heroes.

The GM rolls a 10 on 2D6. Basara's spiritia points are now at 45.

Round 12

Basara is now in range of Glavil's expanding energy wave attack and starts taking even more damage. In anger and desperation, Basara fires one of his leg-mounted rockets at Glavil. Gamlin is shocked by Basara's attack, and actually blocks the missile with the barrel of his gun pod. This snaps Basara out of his rage, and the GM decides that he is no longer furious and stops deducting spiritia points every round.

Gamlin yells at Basara. "Why are you firing, Basara Nekki!? Aren't you supposed to sing!?" Gamlin willingly offers the 11 extra spiritia points he's accumulated to Basara. Mylene follows suit with her (50 - 14 = 36) 36 points of accumulated spiritia, and both Ray and Veffidas join in with their unused spiritia (50 - 15 = 35 and 50 - 17 = 33 points, respectively). Basara starts using his Absorb Spiritia power, and next round all the extra spiritia will flow into him.

Round 13

Basara wins initiative and absorbs all of the spiritia that Gamlin, Mylene, Ray and Veffidas have offered, raising his total to 45 + 11 + 36 + 35 + 33 = 160 points total! The sudden influx of spiritia so shocks Gavil and Glavil that the GM decides that they lose concentration, ending the expanding energy wave and cancelling all their attacks for this round. The spiritia explosion is so powerful that even Sivil senses it within her comatose state aboard City 7. On the Macross 7 bridge, Dr. Chiba and his assistant see Basara's newfound power ("160,000 Chiba Song Units! Wow!" "This will work!") and launch the Fire Valkyrie's Sound Booster. "Sound Booster Unit 1, HASSHIN!"

Round 14

Basara links with the Sound Booster. Ray immediately activates it, and Basara spends 100 of his new spiritia points to activate it. Basara's spiritia level is now at 60 points, but the Sound Booster generates 100 sound energy points for every 1 spiritia point (!) Basara spends. Furthermore, energizing the Sound Booster counts as a free action so Basara gets to make another spiritia attack this round. He promptly spends 20 spiritia points (2,000 sound energy points!) and uses Protodeviln Attack II against both Gavil and Glavil (raising the point cost by x2). Gavil and Glavil both fail their saving throw rolls and flee in terror from Basara's new power, thus ending the battle.
